Millersville University of Pennsylvania

Strategic Directions

STUDENT LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT

Millersville University strives to develop graduates who possess critical thinking, problem solving and lifelong learning skills, sensitivities, curiosity and a sense of responsibility to self and society.  The curriculum will preserve the fundamentals of a liberal arts and sciences education, while simultaneously embracing learning experiences with public, private, regional and global organizations.  The use of information technologies will enhance the quality and richness of learning experiences and students will develop technology skills as an integral part of the learning process.  Technology also will support alternative forms of instructional delivery, including distance education and interactive online instruction.

Through academic and student life programs, the University will prepare students for productive careers and community leadership roles. Co-curricular and extra-curricular programs will promote students’ growth in understanding themselves, working effectively with others, contributing to the diverse communities of which they are a part, and developing skills to be professionally and personally competent.

EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVENESS

Millersville University seeks to create an environment characterized by equal access for all students, faculty and staff regardless of cultural differences, and where individual contributions are not just tolerated but valued.  The University supports the creation and continuance of a community environment that respects individual needs, abilities, and potential, and we will use information technology as a means to enhance communication, promote understanding and build community.  It is a crucial part of the University’s mission to increase multicultural awareness and understanding, within an environment of civility, mutual respect and cooperation with the expectation that all members of the community will exhibit personal integrity and ethical behavior.  A welcoming and inclusive climate is grounded in respect, nurtured by dialogue and evidenced by a pattern of civil interaction.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

Millersville University, as a public institution, commits itself to public service to the region and the Commonwealth.  We will support the efforts of businesses, government agencies, and other organizations for workforce development and economic growth by providing educational, research and outreach programs that respond to regional needs.  Further, we will capitalize on the benefits of information technology to provide consulting, training, research, and other outreach programs that support regional initiatives.  And we will promote and support programs at the community level through student, faculty and staff involvement in service activities.

MANAGEMENT AND RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

The University will promote a working environment that attracts an outstanding and dedicated faculty and staff, embraces a commitment to high quality services to students, their families, and the community, and nurtures a commitment to fiscal, and administrative responsibility.

As stewards for the financial and personnel resources of the University, we will maximize our financial position, optimize performance, and enhance customer service.  We will employ visionary planning and decision-making and prudent investment strategies, and we will maximize cost-benefit efforts to achieve administrative goals.   Members of the University community will be supported in these efforts through leadership and vision, professional development, and technology enhancements that facilitate communication and access to information.

Millersville University will expand funding for institutional priorities and initiatives through private dollars, public grant monies and entrepreneurial activities.  We will develop collaborative projects reflective of institutional strengths and goals with businesses and organizations to invest in the future of the institution and the region.
