Section 5: Policies Concerning Faculty

Workload and Workload Equivalents

Teaching Load Credit and Overload Payment for
Non-Classroom Academic Faculty

The workload for faculty who perform mixed work assignments shall be calculated on a proportional basis, using the appropriate workload definitions for the types of work performed.

As an example of the agreement, the workload equivalent for a librarian teaching a 3 credit course which equates a 1/4 of a regular teaching load would be 8 hours, based on the 35 hours a week working schedule stipulated in the contract for library faculty (1/4 X 35 = 8 hours). The librarian's work week, consequently, would be reduced by 8 hours if he/she were teaching a 3 credit course as part of his/her job assignment. This calculated released time would apply to the specific period when classes are in session.

In a situation where a librarian would be teaching a regular 3 credit course as an overload assignment; i.e., in addition to his/her regular 35 hour work week, he/she will be paid 7 hours of overtime per week during that semester for 20 weeks at his/her regular hourly rate which would be determined by dividing his/her biweekly salary by 70 hours. The 7 hours of overtime per week, in this instance, equates to the contractually stipulated overload payment formula of 1/30 of the academic year's salary for each academic credit hour of overload which another faculty member would receive if he/she were to teach this course.
