Millersville Academic Festival:
A Celebration of Scholarly and Creative Activities

This daylong festival is designed to share faculty research expertise, enhance research techniques and develop scholarly ideas, and celebrate this past year's scholarly and creative achievements of faculty and staff. The event will include panel discussions and presentations on research and scholarly topics, a recognition luncheon, and the Annual Research and Creative Works Exhibit in Ganser Library. All faculty and staff are invited to attend and enjoy the daylong festival.

Session Title: Making the Connection: Linking Research, Creativity, Scholarship, Students and Community

Time Slot: 10:10 to 11:30 am

See how Community-Based Research and Civic Pedagogy can add to your students' research skills and your scholarship no matter what your discipline. Community-based research is a perfect way to expose your students to research methods and show them the relevance of the discipline. Students are able to see how the work they are doing for your class will affect the real world. You are able to publish your findings in the academic journals of your discipline and in service-learning journals.

Session Title: Research in the Disciplines: Contemporary Theory, Current Practice

Time Slot: 10:10 to 11:30 am

Approaches to doing research vary from discipline to discipline and have changed over time. Learn about cutting edge research methodologies in several subject areas and hear from four Millersville faculty members about how they are applying quantitative and/or qualitative methods in their own research.

Session Title: Conducting Research with Human Subjects at Millersville

Time Slot: 1:15 to 2:30 pm

This session will address the special issues and considerations in conducting research with human subjects, from traditional methodologies to cutting-edge. The panel will include members of the Institutional Review Board and faculty members with experience in human subjects research and will focus on helping researchers understand and negotiate the IRB approval process. The panelists will also discuss what our students should know about research issues with human subjects across various disciplines.

Session Title: "Landing the Big One": Strategies for Getting Published

Time Slot: 1:15 to 2:30 pm

This session will feature Millersville's journal editors and focus on those strategies that enhance the prospect of getting your research published by leading journals or university presses. From topic relevance to outlet selection to revise and resubmit strategies, these seasoned editors will speak from their years of experience evaluating manuscripts and working with reviewers.

Session Title: Putting a Research Notion into Motion: Successful Grant Seeking at MU

Time Slot: 2:30 to 3:45 pm

This session is designed to achieve two primary aims: to summarize the institutional resources available to MU faculty members interested in seeking grant funding and to share the strategies of MU faculty members who have competed for grant awards in the past. Ryan Sauder, Director of Grants and Sponsored Research, will describe the grant seeking process at MU and how he can help faculty members maximize the competitiveness of their grant applications. Faculty and staff members from each school will then describe their grant-seeking experiences at MU, including successes, disappointments, and why they view grant seeking as a vital component of their careers at MU.

Session Title: Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: New Frontiers

Time Slot: 2:30 to 3:45 pm

This session will feature examples of the scholarship of teaching and learning, the systematic and thoughtful investigation of student learning for the purposes of improving teaching practice, enhancing student success and informing pedagogy in the discipline.  The presenters integrate the experience of teaching with their scholarly and research interests.  Hear about what your colleagues have discovered about teaching and learning.

  • New off-campus cohort being planned for MED in Special Education
    Graduate Studies, in collaboraton with the School of Education, is promoting a new graduate cohort for the MED in Special Education to be delivered on-site in Harrisburg. Courses are being planning for delivery at the Dixon University Center and in an on-line format. Recruitment for the cohort has started and interested students should contact the Graduate Studies office at 872-3099.
  • New Graduate Student Orientation

  • New Graduate programs in Emergency Management and Gifted Education
    The newly approved MS in Emergency Management (on-line) and M.Ed. in Gifted Education programs, both started in fall semester 2007, are currently inviting applications for the spring 2008 term.
