Problem Name: FEED THE ANIMALS
feed the cats. How much does it cost to feed the dogs and
cats for two weeks?

Answer:
B) Local school children
collected $933 for the shelter. For how many
days would this amount feel the dogs and cats?
How much money would be left over?
Write each step of your work. Explain why you did each step.
Answers: Days Amount
left over
Grade Level: 3-5
Content Area:
Numbers, Systems and Relations
Problem Solution:
Part A -
$25 + $15 = $40
Part A: To find the amount needed to feed the animals for
one day, add
$25 plus
$15.
$40
x $14 = $560
To find the cost for two
weeks, multiply $40 times 14 days.
(Students may solve this
using repeated addition.)
Part B –
$933 ¸ $40 = 23 days
The find the number of days the animals could be fed, divide the amount donated by the cost per day. The remainder of $13 tells how much money was left over.
(Students may solve this using repeated subtraction.)
