Problem Name:  Julie’s Carpet

Grade Level:  4

Content Area: Measurement and Estimation

Problem Solution:

Solution A

7 X 7 =      49

3 X 12 =  +36

                  85 sq. feet

Solution B

10 X 7 =    70

3 X 5 =    +15

                  85 sq. feet

Explanation:  Split the room into 2 parts.  Multiply length X width of one part (7 x 7=49) and the length X width of the other part (3 x 12 = 36). Now take the two products and add them together to find the area.  (49 + 36 = 85)  Area is measured in square feet.  The answer is 85 or 85 square feet of carpet.

Solution C

10 X 12 =  120

7 X 5 =      -35

                    85 sq. feet

Explanation:  You need to extend the top wall to 12 ft. and the side wall to 10 ft. to create a rectangle.  Then multiply the length X width (10 x 12 = 120) to find the area of this rectangle.  Then you need to figure out the area of the section that was added which is

7 x 5 = 35.  Now take the large rectangle area (120) and subtract the area of the small section that was added (35).  120 – 35 = 85.  The area of the room is 85 or 85 sq. ft.

·        Correct answer with correct procedures and correct calculations with an insufficient explanation to support the work shown.

3:

·        Correct answer with no explanation but most procedures shown. (At least one area shown and the addition or subtraction problem)

·        Correct answer with few procedures shown, and some explanation. (e.g. Shows just the areas)

·        Incorrect answer with correct procedures and some explanation. ( one computation error)

2:

·        Correct answer but little explanation and one procedure shown.

·        Correct answer with little of the work shown and no explanation.

·        Incorrect answer with 2 procedures shown correctly and some or no explanation.

1:

·        Correct answer but the work is missing or unreadable and no explanation or unreadable.

·        Incorrect answer but there is one correct step shown and some or no explanation.
