In Gym class, the students measured how far they could jump in inches.  There are twenty-four students in the class.  No two students jumped the same distance.  This information is represented on the box-and-whisker

plot.

A.     How many students jumped less than the median?

B.      How many students jumped more than 34 inches?

For full credit, you must do the following:

1.     Show OR describe each step of your work, even if you did it in your head (“mental math”) or used a calculator,

AND

2.     Write an explanation stating the mathematical reason(s) why you chose each of your steps.

SOLUTION

WORK

EXPLANATION

A. 50% X 24 = 12

(50% of the values are less than the median)

To find the number of jumps less than the median.

B.  25% X 24 = 6

(25% of the values are greater than the upper quartile).

To find the number of jumps greater than the upper quartile.

Specific Rubric:

5 –Advanced Understanding, Excellent

Correct answers with correct procedures/correct calculations shown or described and a written explanation that supports the work shown.  The explanation must state that 50% of the values are less than the median and that 25% of the values are greater than the upper quartile. The student need not comment on the significance of all jumps being different.

4-Satisfactory Understanding

A.                                                     Correct answers with correct procedures and calculations shown or described with some explanation.

B.                                                      Correct answers with partial procedures/calculations shown or described and complete explanations.

3- Almost Satisfactory Understanding

A.                                                     Correct answers with 2 correct procedures and calculations shown or described and no explanation.

B.                                                     Correct answers with 1 correct procedure and calculations shown or described and some explanation..

C.                                                     Incorrect answer with correct procedures shown or described and some explanation BUT with one calculation and copying error carried through.

2-Partial Understanding

A.                                                     Correct answers with 1 correct procedure and calculation and no explanation.

B.                                                     Incorrect answer with 1 correct procedure and calculation and some explanation. (Student might use 25% in Part A or 50% in Part B, either of which is a procedural error).

C.                                                     Incorrect answer with 1 correct procedure and calculation and no explanation.

1-Minimal Understanding

A.                                                     Correct answers with procedures, calculations and explanations that are not legible or not understandable or missing or incorrect.

B.                                                     Incorrect answer, with one correct and critical procedure shown or described or explained.  If there is a calculation with that procedure it must be correct.

0-No Understanding

Incorrect answer with no correct procedures, calculations or explanations shown or described.  May, also include a question mark or two (??) or “I don’t know” written on page
