Problem Name:  Pizza Party

Problem:

A class of thirty students is having a pizza party.  The chart below shows the fraction of the class and the number of slices of pizza each student ordered.

A.  How many slices of pizza should be ordered?

B.  Each slice of pizza cost $1.25.  What is the total cost?

                           Class                     Slice(s)

            1/6

              1

            1/3

              2

            1/2

              3

Directions:  To get full credit the student must show or describe each step of their work,

even if they did it in their head (mental math) or used a calculator.  The

student must write an explanation stating the mathematical reason(s) why

they chose each of the steps.

Problem Name:  Pizza Party

Grade Level:  6-8

Content Area: Numbers, Number Systems, and Number Relationships

Problem Solution:

1.)    1/3  x 30/1= 10

        1/6  x 30/1 = 5

             1/2 x 30/1 = 15

1.)To find the # of students

    for 1,2, or3 slices:

   multiply fractions and #

    of   students in class.

Calculation error: using the reciprocal for the fractions.

Ex. 3/1 x 30/1 = 90

2.)10 x 2 = 20

5 x 1 = 5

15 x 3 = 45

     20 + 5 + 45 = 70 slices

2.)  To find total amount of slices needed:  multiply # of students and the # of slices.

Then add up the totals .

3.) 70 x $1.25 = $87.50

3.)To find the total cost of Pizza slices:  multiply # of slices and the money.

Possible calculation error:

Placement of decimal incorrect.  $8.75 or $875.00

A.

Correct answer, at least 1 correct procedure shown with some explanation.

B.

Incorrect answer, with at least 2 correct procedures and       calculations and at least some explanation.

1

A.

Correct answer to either the number of students, total number of slices, or total cost with illegible or missing procedures, calculations, or explanations.

B.

Incorrect answer with at least one correct procedure or calculation shown.
