Title of Project: Bead Bracelet Blast

Team Members:  Rachel Bull, Katherine Falso, Mary Beth Ross

Grade Level: 4

Concepts used:  Measuring, Developing repeated patterns, algebraic expressions

PA Standard(s) Addressed:

2.1.5D Addition and subtraction of fractions

2.2.5B Develop and apply algorithms to solve word problem which involve addition with fractions

2.4.5B Math reasoning and connections

2.5.5 A and E Justify problem solving

2.8.5A and D Creating patterns, Algebra

NCTM Standard(s) Addressed:

Algebra- Describe and make generalizations about geometric and numeric patterns.

Measurement- Understand the need for measuring with standard units in customary and metric units

Representation- Create and use representations to organize, record, and communicate mathematical ideas.

Introduction / applications:  Generate patterns that satisfy certain parameters for a bracelet. Represent the patterns symbolically with algebraic expressions. Explain why the pattern design works.

Question:  What bead patterns can be created following given parameters to create a bracelet?

Model:

1. Use ¼ inch grid paper to represent beads to generate two-inch patterns to form a six-inch bracelet.

2. Translate colored squares to symbols. Create an algebraic expression to represent the pattern.

3. Create bracelet using the pattern.

4. Write an explanation of why your pattern works.

Resources and Materials (estimated cost):

$2.99 for a bag of 100 multi colored ¼ inch beads

$.49   for a bag of 28 colored ¾ inch beads

$3.99 for 100 yards of elastic silver or gold covered cord.

Each bracelet needs 15 beads and 10 inches of elastic cord. Cost about 12 cents per bracelet.

(Cut straws and pipe cleaners could be substituted)

Procedures & Activities:

Answers/ Rubric:

Accommodations/ Adaptations

ESL: Choose national flag colors or significant colors such as Kinte cloth

Special Ed: Use manipulatives such as Unifix cubes to create design and then transfer to grid paper.  Use colored pencils to match design colors for algebraic expressions

Enrichment: Chose from the following:

Select a bracelet design that costs the least.  Select or decide on which bracelet patterns to use for a fundraiser.

Find out the quantities in each bag of beads. Given selected designs, how many bags of beads are needed with the fewest beads left over?
