Introduction / applications:   Kids love to pick out their own clothes.

 

Given the money and a selected choice, students can select their own wardrobe.

 

Question:  Your school, Steve-John Elementary School, has decided to have

Students wear uniforms. You have been given a budget of $250 to purchase clothes from the J.C. Penny catalog for the school year.

Given the budget of $250 what clothes would you purchase that would also give you the greatest variety of outfits.

Procedures & Activities:

1.

Given the J.C. Penny’s Catalog and a calculator the student will purchase a minimum of a shirt, pair of pants/shirt, and a pair of shoes using the budget of $250.

2.

All clothes must be either white, navy blue or khaki .

3.

With the remaining money students must choose the clothing combinations that will give them the greatest variety of outfits.

4.

Each student will list the items purchased and choose a method to justify their purchases that total $250.  Students need to find an organized way to list their choices so they show the most variety of outfits for the year.

ESL:  Students may work in partners, manipulative visuals provided

 

Special Ed: Students will work with partners or in small groups.  Extended time for work is allowed.  Students will be able to highlight catalogs.

 

Enrichment:

 

Filling out a chart: Students will fill out the order form from the Penny’s catalog to order items.

 

Graphing: Students will poll their classmates to determine their thought on school uniforms. Students will graph results.

 

Cross- Curricula Writing – Students depending on their individual vote will write a letter to the principal persuading him to change the dress code.
