what you’ll be saying when you visit the GIMMIE School Store !” This is the store that helps you answer the
questions:
Question:
“How can I buy things that I
want?” “How much change will I get in return?”
Model:
Money and school supplies
labeled with varied prices
Resources and Materials (estimated cost): $20.00
Poster board, money (real or
plastic), school supply items, containers, worksheets and pencils, calculators
Procedures and Activities: After teaching subtracting
across zeroes:
1. Review concepts of shopping,
buying items, receiving change.
2. Introduce the school supply
store by discussing items and prices, and that students will be “given” a $5.00
bill to spend at the store.
3. Complete an example
together: Use two teacher chosen items, add their costs, then
subtract the total from $5.00 to find the change the students would receive
from the clerk. Have students check their work using calculators.
4. Repeat step 3, but use a student
choice for each of the 2 items.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4, but
use 3 items from the store each time.
6. Distribute worksheets. Allow
students to work in pairs to complete the sheet. Have students check their work
with calculators.
Answers/Rubric
Each person will check their
partner’s answers with a calculator.
Students will help partners correct any errors. However, if these or
similar worksheets are to be corrected by the teacher, the following rubric
