·        Students will be able to use the calendar to calculate elapsed time.

·        Students will calculate elapsed time.

·        Students will be able to apply the use of elapsed time to a real life schedule.

Instructional Strategies and Plan (include strategies used to help different types of learners, i.e. auditory, visual, etc):

1.      Read story The Long Wait  by Annie Cobb or choose one of the other books listed.

2.      5 minute review:

Tell how much time…

A.     ____ minutes = one quarter hour. (15 minutes)

B.    30 minutes = ________  (one half hour)

C.    one hour = _______ minutes  (60 minutes)

D.    six at night is written   (6:00 P.M.)

E.     What fraction names 15 minutes?  (1/4 hour)

F.     What are the two dividing times between A.M. and P.M.? (noon, midnight)

G.    Why must we include A.M. or P.M. when we write times? (because the numbers repeat; need those letters to indicate which 9 o’clock you mean)

3.      Calendar Activity

Use classroom monthly calendar  - ask questions such as …

A.     Your vacation starts on August 26.  The vacation lasts 8 days.  On what day does your vacation end?  (September 2)

B.    How many days are there from the 8th to the 21st?  (13 days)

C.    If today is Monday, October 6, what day and date would it be one week and two days later? (Wednesday, October 15)

D.    Place a counter on the current calendar date and another counter on a date 10 days from this.  How can you find out how much time has elapsed between these two days?

Vocabulary

elapsed time

analog clock

digital clock

A.M.  ante meridiem (before noon)

P.M.  post meridiem (after noon)

Classwork Whole Class Activity

·        Students work in teams of two.  Each child has a Judy clock.  Student A sets his/her clock at a given starting time.  Student B sets his/her clock to a given ending time.

·        Class discussion on elapsed time.

·        Teacher uses the classroom’s daily schedule to practice examples of elapsed time.

·        Teacher models additional examples followed by student participation.

Instruction

Continue using clocks to set starting and ending times.  Then begin to demonstrate elapsed time on a T chart.

T chart example:

     Hour

    Minute

    +10

     +1

    +20

  1 hour

  30 minutes

Start Time                 Ending Time

  9:50 A.M.                11:20 A.M.

 +  10  min.

10:00A.M.

+ 1 hour

11:00 A.M.                +20 min.

                                11:20 A.M.

Do numerous examples on overhead and at children’s seats.

Students will continue to work with partners – use clocks and T chart to complete worksheet together for additional practice.

Suggestion: Have students use blue pencil to show the hour hand and a red pencil to show the minute hand.  Could also, use blue and red when completing the T charts. (see worksheet 1)

Materials/Resources:

Individual student Judy clocks

Teacher Judy Clock (one or two)

Pre-made “I Have, Who Has?” game

Assessment Strategies:

·         Formative Evaluation (checking student understanding during the lesson):

Teacher observation while student is working with partner.

·         Summative Evaluation (How will it be determined that the objectives were achieved?):

Completion of the “I Have, Who Has?” game.

Correctives/Remediation:

  • Use technology sites.
  • Use additional materials
  • Use resource teachers

Extensions/Enrichment:

Students make their own “I Have…Who Has?” game (Limit the number of cards to the game.)

Special Accommodations (special needs students)

·          Description of the Special Needs student selected:

#5 Male   This student has been sick very often.  Because of this, his attendance at school has been erratic.  He loves to experiment with things, however.  At home, he is busy performing all kinds of experiments with household items. His school work has also been poor.  It is unclear whether this is because of his attendance or a difficulty acquiring school related information.

·          Accommodations to use with this student:

·    Make up worksheets he has missed and do fewer of the problems.

·    Use peer tutors

·    Use technology that he cold use at home http://www.oswego.org/testprep/math4/d/elapsedp.cfm

·    Send home literature based book and have him illustrate a math problem from the book.
