Solving Equations Using a Balance Scale
Each picture shows a
perfectly balanced scale.
See if you can figure out how
many beans are in each cup.
Each cup contains the exact
same number of beans.
1.
2.
3.
This is how you can change an
equation into a balance scale picture:
·
Cups are going to
replace the unknown in the equation.
·
Beans will
replace the numbers.
·
For example, 2x + 4 = 3x + 3 , would be shown like this:
(over)
Using your cups and beans,
show how you would represent each equation.
Draw a picture to show your
balance scale.
4.
2x + 6 = 3x + 2
5.
8y + 2 = 2y + 14
6.
16 = 7 + 3w
Look
at each picture below and write the equation that it represents.
7.
__________ = __________
8.
__________ = __________
9.
__________ = __________
TO GRAPH AN EQUATION
TI-83 & TI-84
Getting
Ready:
Press Y= Clear all equations and make sure no
STAT PLOTS
are highlighted
Press
ZOOM 6 ENTER This
sets the standard window
Press MODE Make sure the left side is highlighted
Now to graph the equation:
Press Y=
Type your
equation into y=
Press GRAPH
If your graph isn’t visible, adjust the screen
using:
WINDOW (Enter
appropriate minimum and maximum
values for x and y)
ZOOM ( Try ZoomFit
)
The TRACE function can now be used to find individual (x,y) points on the graph. Use the left and right arrows on the toggle switch to move along the graph. The x and y values appear at the bottom of the screen.
Another way to look at the (x,y) values is by using the TABLE function
Press 2nd WINDOW to bring up table setup
Enter a value for x in TblStart
Press 2nd GRAPH to display the table of values
Each pair of (x,y) values identifies a point on the graph.
