(Download as Microsoft Word Documents: Instructional Plan, Flags)

Name of group members:

Leigh Duncan, Betty Elliott, Maureen Kishbaugh

Topic/Theme:

        Geometry/Symmetry

Level:

        Third Grade

Time Element:

        50 Minutes

NCTM Standards Addressed:

Identify and describe linear symmetry in two-dimensional shapes and designs

PA Math Standards Addressed:

o       2.9.3 E: Identify and draw lines of symmetry in geometric figures

o       2.9.3 F: Identify symmetry in nature

Math Assessment Anchors Addressed:

o       M3.C.2.1.1 Identify one line of symmetry in a two-dimensional figure

o       M3C.2.1.2 Identify symmetrical two-dimensional shapes

Objectives:

o       Students will identify/draw one line of symmetry in a two-dimensional figure.

o       Students will identify symmetrical two-dimensional shapes.

Instructional Strategies and Plan (include strategies used to help different types of learners, i.e. auditory, visual, etc):

o       INTRODUCTION (review lines of symmetry)—Have students fold a sheet of paper in half. Ask children to draw a simple shape on their paper with one side along the fold. With their paper folded, have children cut out their shape except for the fold. Have children open up their papers and identify the new shape that they see. Discuss with children how the two sides of the new shape match.

o       LESSON--Project a colored transparency of a flag of any nationality. Ask the following questions:

What shapes are in the flag?

Is the flag symmetrical?

Which way or ways can you fold it to make two halves that match exactly?

Repeat with several flags of different nationalities.

Materials/Resources:

construction paper, scissors, colored flag transparencies, books containing pictures of world flags, tracing paper, crayons, markers, rulers, blank paper

Interdisciplinary Connections:

o       Technology—Websites related to topic used as extensions

o       Social Studies—Research flags of the world

o       Art—Design and present a flag

o       Science—see extensions

Assessment Strategies:

o       Formative Evaluation (checking student understanding during the lesson):

o       Teacher observation, class participation, monitor for understanding and adjust instruction,

o       Summative Evaluation (How will it be determined that the objectives were achieved?):

Students will create a flag using at least two colors and show at least one line of symmetry.

Correctives/Remediation:

Use prepared two-dimensional geometric shapes to draw or fold lines of symmetry.

Use MIRAs  create and discover lines of symmetry.

Extensions/Enrichment:

o       Nature scavenger hunt to find symmetrical shapes

o       In-school scavenger hunt to find symmetrical shapes

Special Accommodations (special needs students)

o       Description of the Special Needs student selected:

Student has severely impaired vision.

o       Accommodations to use with this students:

preferential seating, textured geometric shapes, increased size of visual aids, adaptive technology if available

Key Words: symmetry, lines of symmetry, properties of geometric figures, congruence, transformational geometry
