Objectives:
Instructional Strategies and Plan:
Day 1 : Introduction of Time Elapse
Materials:
Have available ahead of time for manipulation. Circle sizes to match clock
faces.
advance- if possible, laminate (See Template)
Vocabulary Words: quarter
after, half hour, quarter of, elapse time
Procedure: Before class begins, if possible, COVER the analog clock in your
classroom
1. Read the Poem “Wee Willie Winkle”
Ask students for interpretation of the rhyme
Note the reference to “Time”
Briefly review and identify ½, ¼, ¾ using color-coded pieces
3. Put Analog Clock Transparency on the overhead
Numbers on the clock are missing. What do the whole numbers represent in terms
of measurement?
Example: 1 can represent 5 minutes or 1 can represent 1 hour depending upon the
unit of measure being used.
Where did you put the whole numbers?
Review that the whole numbers on the clock skip count by 5’s ( Making a
multiplication connection.)
Identify the minute markings on the clock
Now distribute the student copy of an analog clock. Fill in the whole numbers.
Adaptation if needed for next step: Have two different colored circles available
for cutting into ½ ‘s and ¼ ‘s for the students’ worksheets.
4. Place the ¼ circular fractional piece on the transparency analog clock between the 12
and 3. Students identify the part and the amount of time it represents. On what whole
number on the clock does this ¼ fractional piece end? Remove piece.
Adaptation:
You can correlate the analog time to the
digital time by writing the digital time in the
digital clock.
5. Place the ½ circular fractional piece on the transparency analog clock between 12 and
6. Students identify the fractional pieces and the amount of time it represents. On what
whole number on the clock does this ½ fractional piece end? Remove piece.
Adaptation: You can correlate the analog time to the
digital time by writing the
digital time in the digital clock
6. Place ¾ circular fractional pieces on the transparency analog clock between 12 and 9.
Students identify the fractional piece and the amount of time it represents. On what
whole number on the clock does this ¾ fractional piece end? Remove piece.
Adaptation: You can correlate the analog time to the
digital time by writing the
digital time in
the digital clock.
7. Students make predictions on where to place the (3) vocabulary word cards on the
clock. Call on one or three different volunteers to come to the overhead to
demonstrate where these vocabulary words will be placed on the clock.
8. Distribute laminated time lines to each student.
Ask students to identify the attributes of time
Example: (24 hours in a day, 12 hours in the a.m., 12 hours in the p.m., distinguish
Between a.m. and p.m. and how Time is linear, connects in a circular form,
dividing line marks between each hour)
9. Can the students predict what the line marks represent between each hour mark?
(15min., 30 min.,45 min.)
Have students use vocabulary words, and the amount of time each mark represents
10. To show elapsed time, choose one colored paper clip to represent a starting time and
the other for the finishing time.
Teacher samples:
Willie arrive
at the park?
is he
finished?
fifteen
minutes. What time is it?
11. In pairs, students are to write onto a 3 x 5 card (one problem on each side) two
elapsed problems. Stay in pairs. Rotate each pair’s card to the right. The next
student pair is to solve the problems on the index card. Check answers with the
original authors.
Day 2
group that
reasoning strategies are verbally shared. After groups have completed
activity
class is brought back together to discuss strategies.
Day 3
The rest of the group will work on the next challenging activity.

hours just at the park?
TR – 4 ½ includes
the time to get to the ice cream shop.
ST – Help – I’m

TR – Suggest they
list all problem solving strategies – When they list draw a picture suggest
they to do so…telling them that sounds like a plan.
TR - Pose a
question…IS every piece of information important?
