LANCASTER CITY

Not only is Lancaster one of the oldest inland cities in the United States , it was capital of the nation for a day in 1777 and was capital of Pennsylvania from 1799 to 1812. Extensive restoration in the 1970s has shaped its current appearance, and this nearby city, with a population of more than 56,000, offers a number of history and art museums as well as a wide variety of restaurants and recreational facilities.

The city radiates from Penn Square and its imposing Soldiers and Sailors monument. Around the square are banks and stores as well as Old City Hall , which now houses the Heritage Center of Lancaster County. Behind it is Central Market, the nation's oldest farmers market, where scores of standholders sell local fresh produce, meat, cheese, flowers and more on Tuesdays and Fridays from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

To become familiar with Lancaster, the Historic Lancaster Walking Tour, headquartered in the Southern Market Center, 100 S. Queen St . , provides an excellent 90-minute introduction to architecturally-interesting sites in the downtown area, as well as city and county maps.

Lancaster County , home of many Amish, Mennonite and other plain sects, provides an abundance of activities for casual tourists and serious students of the culture. The Pennsylvania Dutch Convention & Visitors Bureau, 501 Greenfield Road (at the Greenfield Road exit of Route 30), can provide helpful information. Many tourist attractions, restaurants and motels are clustered along Routes 30 and 340, east of Lancaster .
