Millersville University is both a top-notch university and a vital part of the Central Pennsylvania town of
Millersville and its surrounding communities. As an academic center, it is an excellent choice for the pursuit
of educational dreams through a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. Located on 250 acres in
the heart of historic Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Millersville University is a community-based campus
that affords students easy access to everything this centrally-located area has to offer. The campus is a little
more than an hour from Baltimore and Philadelphia and just a few hours from Washington, D.C., and New
York City, all with endless possibilities for both culture and fun.
As the largest educational institution in Lancaster County, MU is a hub of year-round activity and a sponsor
of many community-based annual events. The campus itself is also a tranquil place - it has a pleasing mix of
historic buildings and modern structures, all 78 of which are conveniently located around the “lake” - the
focal point of the campus center - or nearby on quaint side streets.
MU is one of the fourteen institutions in Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education (SSHE).
These institutions were first known as normal schools, primarily charged with training Pennsylvania’s
teachers. Subsequently, they evolved into state colleges and achieved university status in 1983. While
Millersville University began in 1855 as a teachers college, it now offers a wide range of graduate and
undergraduate majors in the areas of science and mathematics, education and humanities and social
sciences. Undergraduate students may take their education one step further by applying to the Honors
College, a program that challenges them to raise their academic and professional sights beyond their
expectations.
Overall, MU has a reputation for graduating students who are well trained and ready to offer valuable and
competent skills to potential employers. In fact, a recent survey of MU graduates indicated that 75 percent
were hired within three months of their graduation and 97 percent were currently employed.
