Microsoft Windows operating system updates are a necessity whenever a PC accesses the internet. Updates maintain the functionality of the PC, ensuring that it continues to perform well for the user. Microsoft provides free updates for Windows 98, ME, 2000, and XP.
- To have Microsoft scan the PC to determine which updates are needed, open Internet Explorer, open the Tools menu and select "Windows Update".
- Microsoft will then check if your computer has the latest version of Windows Updating software that is necessary to run the update.

- You will then be given the option to choose the type of updates to check for on your computer.
- By selecting the "Express" option you will be notified on high-priority updates for your computer. This option is recommended as quick way to update your computer with the least amount of unnecessary options.
- By selection the "Custom" option you will be provided with a list of updates for your computer including high-priority updates and optional updates for other Microsoft programs.
- At the completion of the scan for updates you may be asked to install required updates for the use of the Windows Update website. By clicking on the "Details" or "More Options" button will open a list of the available updates with a short description. Click "Install" to continue.
