"Finding the Right Track to Smart Growth in the Garden State"
John Hasse, Ph.D. AICP

John is associate professor at Rowan University. He earned his BA from Rowan (Geography) and his PhD in Geography from Rutgers University. Professor Hasse just earned his planning certification (AICP) this summer. As the most densely populated state in the nation, New Jersey struggles with managing land and natural resources in the face of ongoing development pressure. In recent decades, development rates have far outstripped rates of population increase making the Garden State on track to being the first state to reach build-out by the middle of the century. While much of the development is characteristically sprawling, New Jersey is also a leader in pioneering land management policies and open space initiatives. The race for open space in the Garden State will be affected by many variables, notwithstanding, the economic downturn. The recent shift toward emphasizing Transit Oriented Development and LEED-ND certified green neighborhood development may also have a significant impact on the pattern of future growth. This presentation assesses the trends of development as well as the trends of the myriad anti-sprawl policies to get a glimpse into what the Garden State may be like when it runs out of land in a few short decades.
