Chapter 5: Student Life Programs
Conclusions and Recommendations
Strengths
- Millersville offers students a broad array of diverse cultural, intellectual and social programs that attract thousands of students.
- The formation of the Student Alcohol Abuse Task Force demonstrates our commitment to encouraging healthy student behaviors and holds promise for increasing their involvement in University activities.
- Millersville offers a wide array of wellness, athletic and recreational programs that appeal to diverse populations and successfully integrate academics.
- Our new capital facilities master plan includes major improvements to athletic and recreational facilities.
- New Resident Life leadership is in place to begin creating an environment and programming to address evolving student needs.
- Our orientation program is of high quality, with positive feedback from participants.
- EXCEL and MU Getaway successfully train future student leaders.
- Campus religious organizations appear to be meeting students' spiritual needs.
Areas of Concern
- We have not yet become a university that fully immerses all students in co-curricular and extracurricular experiences. Students of color appear to participate in extracurricular activities at lower rates than other students do.
- There is evidence of alcohol abuse among a significant portion of the student body.
- Student life programs appear to be understaffed, particularly in light of efforts to become a more involved campus. Staff development and realignment may be needed to achieve Student Affairs' mission and vision.
- Current residence halls are in need of major renovations, and we lack the funding to bring them to desired standards without bond financing.
- Many students report that they do not attend special cultural and intellectual programs unless professors give extra credit.
- Students would like many campus facilities open until the early morning hours.
- While programs like EXCEL give students the tools needed to be successful student leaders as well as lifelong leadership skills, they reach only a small number of students because many will participate only if they receive academic credit.
Recommendations
- With assistance from our finest scholars, staff, and students, identify best practices and models for freshman year experience programs that would best meet the needs of our students.
- Implement the Student Alcohol Abuse Task Force's recommendations, which hold promise for stemming unhealthy student behavior.
Suggestions
- Place a priority on completing those projects in the new capital facilities master plan and residence hall long-range plan that most directly improve students' out-of-classroom experiences and encourage interaction and learning. Such projects would include residence halls, athletic facilities, and outdoor gathering spaces. Include student life staff in planning these facilities.
- Provide residence hall learning experience designed to support lifelong skill development.
- Identify impediments to the participation of students of color in extracurricular activities and develop plans to overcome them.
- Align Student Affairs staff to best meet student needs, and provide professional development to enable Resident Life staff to engage in innovative practices.
