Chapter 6: Support Services for Students
Supporting the University Mission through Appropriate Goals

Program reviews and annual reports for each of the support services considered in this chapter document that they fulfill their missions with generally high marks. The team drafting this chapter reviewed the goals of each support service and found them to be generally well developed, appropriate, attainable, and in keeping with the support service's mission. The team concluded that each of the support services is clearly integral to and in support of the University's mission.

The 1997 program review for the Academic Advisement office notes that "an observable clear vision, mission, and goals for the program seem to be absent." The office, staffed by an interim director during the review, has since developed goals but not a mission or vision. (A search for a permanent director is underway.) Goals in support of registration are lacking.

The goals of the Center for Counseling and Human Development seek to expand opportunities for internships, practica, and educational outreach opportunities for students and new faculty. These demanding program additions may not be feasible in light of a limited staff already working to capacity. It is not uncommon for students to wait as long as three weeks for appointments. The number of counselor consultations with a contracted psychiatrist regarding students with very serious problems has nearly doubled in the past three years.
