The University employs 446 faculty members, of whom 323 are full-time. Among the full-time faculty, 85 % hold terminal (doctorate and MFA) degrees in their fields of specialty. Their backgrounds, commitment to scholarship, and dedication to teaching enable the university to deliver excellent programs to students. A comfortable and congenial atmosphere and cooperative relationships exist among faculty on campus.
Like faculty everywhere, many
Millersville faculty see themselves as overworked and underappreciated,
especially by elected public officials. (As a member of our
team noted, this is a common concern, and it behooves all of
us in public higher education to spread the word that teaching
twelve hours a week does not translate into working
twelve hours a week. )
Faculty at Millersville are supported in a variety of ways, including travel funds to participate in conferences and other forms of professional development, computers on their desks, and the opportunity to teach summer courses at lucrative salaries. In addition, there are many opportunities for faculty to pursue new interests by reassignment for a period of time.
In conversations, several faculty mentioned the continuing need for an orientation process for new faculty members so that they can better understand expectations for faculty members at Millersville and learn the strategies to become an effective teacher. Given a complex curriculum - especially the detailed general education program, for which faculty members provide academic advice -- the need for a comprehensive orientation seems undisputable.
