Dr. Christopher Corley, professor of musicology and director of Millersville University’s West African Dance and Drum Ensemble, received a bachelor of music and the master of music degrees from the Juilliard School of Music (vocal performance) and a Ph.D. in musicology from Florida State University. He formally taught ethnomusicology and West African drumming at Florida State and Florida A&M universities. Dr. Corley’s publications include, Music and Culture in the European Tradition, (Kendall Hunt, 2008), African American Contributions to Popular Music, (Kendall Hunt, 2004), “Music and Its Relationship to Spirit Possession at the First Pentecostal Church of Christ,” “Feminist Critique of Rap Music from a Male Point of View,” “Black and Technologically Sound: Rap Music Hits the Diaspora,” and ‘Working in the Zone: Black Technological Artists.” He has choreographed numerous pieces for West African dance ensembles as well as composed music for jazz and West African musical instruments. As a vocalist, he has performed and recorded with leading classical and world music artists. Recently, Dr. Corley directed a panel discussion at the Open Stage of Harrisburg, exploring the West African musical retentions found in the musical style of Billie Holiday. The symposium included a distinguished group of University professors. Dr. Corley is a member of The Society for Ethnomusicology, College Music Society, and The Society for Black Music Research. Dr. Corley joined the Millersville music faculty in 1999.
