The Pennsylvania Governor's School for Teaching (PGST), a five week residential summer academic program for talented high school seniors, seeks education majors from all disciplines to complete its resident counselor and intern staff. These positions will be available to new applicants each year.
Counselors and Interns will attend an in-service scheduled the week before the program, and will be responsible for set-up of the designated building to be used for the Kid's College and the dorm halls.
Resident Counselors and Interns earn a salary of $2000 plus room and board.
Counselors
The principal duty of the Counselors is to see to the welfare of the program's participants from the hours of 2:30 PM to 1:00AM during the five weeks of the program. Additional daytime hours may be required when the Counselor has accepted a specific duty which takes place in morning or aftrenoon hours. These additional duties are agreed upon in advance and posted in the program handbook (MIRROR). The duties required of the Counselors are as follows:
- Nightly "check in" of participants
- Supervision and maintenance of order and quiet on the participants' floor
- Enforcement of program rules and guidelines
- Maintenance of student rooms, help with move-in and move-out, procedures for keys; clean-up, trash removal and key return at close of program.
- Nightly distribution of medication to participants
- Creation and organization of CAKES and Campus Rally
- Participation in all field trips as chaperones
- Pick-up and distribution of mail to participants
- Participation and support for all public events, ceremonies, Kids' College parent events and slide shows
- Direct responsibility to the Director of Counseling for daily meeltings, and shared responsibility for attending program staff meetings and reporting to the counseling team
- Rendering assistance to the director and assistant director of the program as needed
Interns
The principal duty of the Intern is to render assistance to their assigned Cluster Mentors and PGST staff between the hours of 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM during the five weeks of PGST. Interns will serve as substitute teachers for Mentors who are not available.The duties required of the Interns are as follows:
- Render support to Mentors of their assigned Cluster during teaching assignments, except during article discussion meetings
- Kids' College bus facilitator
- Kids' College lunch facilitator
- Provide advice to the program's participants concerning their teaching abilities, using periodic classroom observations; offer support for evening lesson planning, remaining available on the residence floor
- Facilitate student access to materials to support their lesson plans
- Demonstrate appropriate classroom management techniques that help maintain a safe and productive learning environment
- Collaborate with Counselors in the creation and organization of recreational activities and CAKES for the participants
- Aid in enforcement of program rules and guidelines
- Rendering assistance to the director and assistant director of the program as needed

Program Description
PGST's sixty-four students are successful and skilled individuals with an expressed interest in the profession of teaching. PGST offers these students opportunities to learn about and practice teaching. Activities include teaching younger children in Kids' College, teaching peers in teams and in one-on-one situations, journaling, developing and implementing a leadership project, and working in groups to design a future school. Students are exposed to various learning theories, as well as learning and teaching styles, learner differences, multicultural education, educational technology, school reform, and social and political issues related to education. Students work individually, as well as in groups of various sizes, but the essential unit of the school is the team with its mentor-teacher.
Qualifications
Formal academic preparation in education, completion of junior year preferred
Experience in supervision of youth in school or other settings preferred
Ability to relate to highly motivated high school students
Ability to work cooperatively with a diverse and highly skilled faculty and staff
High levels of creativity, flexibility, energy, stamina
Strong commitment to collaborative, experiential learning and to the philosophy of the program

Each faculty member serves as a mentor-teacher to a team of students, works with other faculty members to teach a variety of topics, and performs program duties matched to his/her interests and skills. Faculty members earn a salary of $3000, and room and board if requested.

Qualifications

Classroom teaching experience at the elementary or secondary level, three years preferred
Ability to relate to highly motivated high school students
Ability to function effectively in the role of a mentor or guide
Ability to work cooperatively with a diverse and highly skilled faculty and staff
High levels of creativity, flexibility, energy, stamina
Strong commitment to collaborative, experiential learning and to the philosophy of the program
