If I discover that my office or room has been burglarized what should I do?
Do not touch anything and call the university police. Investigators may be able to dust for fingerprints.
I continuously receive prank or hang up phone calls, can I have a trace put on my phone?
Threatening calls should be reported to the police immediately. Record the date, time, and nature of nuisance calls and if the calls continue contact university police. A trace may be placed on your phone only when the calls are threatening in nature.
Can I be arrested by the University Police?
Yes, MU police officers are certified police officers and have full powers of arrest.
What do I do if I get a citation?
You have 10 days to contact the District Justice. You may plead guilty and pay a fine or you may plead not guilty and request a hearing. At the hearing, the officer will present evidence and witnesses; you will have an opportunity to question the officer and witnesses and testify in your own behalf. Following the testimony the District Justice will determine if you are guilty or not guilty of the charge filed against you.
Can education majors get their teaching certification if they are arrested?
Yes, if the charge is a minor summary offense a misdemeanor or felony charge will jeopardize certification
What should I do if I witness a crime?
Do not place your self in danger and contact University Police immediately. Be a good witness, note descriptions of individuals, cars, direction of travel, etc. and relay that information to the police dispatcher.
If I am arrested will my parents be contacted?
If you are over 18 years old your parents will not be contacted by the police department. Exception: PA Title 18 Section 6308 and related sections for Underage possession, consumption, and transportation of an alcoholic beverage, or other alcohol-related statutes pertaining to persons under the age of 21. These statutes mandate parental notification for individuals under the age of 21.
