University Police and Security officers provide an average of 15,000 service calls per year, and include a wide variety of types of service. Some types of services MUPD will provide are:
Police calls are prioritized and that emergencies, in progress calls, criminal calls, and other calls pertaining to the exigent safety or security of the campus have to take precedence over service calls. You will be told at the time you call whether there is an officer available to assist you, or if you may have to wait.
Requesting a jump-start for your vehicle
Call X3433 or 872-3433. You will need to tell the dispatcher the make, model and color of your car, and your location, so that we can find you. Remain with your car. An officer will arrive as soon as possible and as soon as higher priority calls permit. If you see a patrol unit enter your area, it will help if you flag it down..sometimes there are many people standing around in a parking lot and we have no way of knowing what you look like. Keep in mind that police and security officers are not mechanics; if a battery jump does not start your car, we are unable to help you further, except to provide you with telephone numbers to local vehicle service stations.
Requesting help for your keys locked in your car
Call X3433 or 872-3433. You will need to tell the dispatcher the make, model and color of your car, and your location, so that we can find you. Remain with your car. An officer will arrive as soon as possible and as soon as higher priority calls permit. WE CAN NOT assist you if your car has electric locks or side airbags. Eclectric locks and side airbags have been documented to cause up to significant injury to persons who attempt to open cars equipped with them. Keep in mind that police and security officers are not locksmiths; if we are unable to open your car, we will be able to provide you with phone numbers to local vehicle lockout services.
Requesting to sign out a university owned vehicle after hours
If you wish to use a University-owned vehicle for your organization's event, you will first have to make arrangements with the Palmer Physical Facilities office at X3275 or 872-3275. If you are signing out a university-owned vehicle from the motor pool during business hours, enter the Palmer Garage or Physical Plant office to arrange to sign out your vehicle. After hours, MUPD will release the assigned vehicle to you, but ONLY if the appropriate, signed paperwork is present. Be sure you have made arrangements with the Palmer Physical Facilities office in sufficient advance for your request to be received by Palmer, approved, and forwarded.
If arriving after hours, please call University police when you arrive at Palmer for your vehicle, as we can not make appointments to handle service calls due to the nature of police work. If you do not have a mobile phone, you may call University police at x3433 or 872-3433 and give your estimated time of arrival. You WILL need to have your valid driver's license with you, and your name will have to be on the paperwork. Due to the extensive liability involved, MUPD officers will ONLY release a vehicle if all of the following circumstances are present:
If the paperwork is not complete, or the vehicle you've been assigned has not been returned in time for you to pick it up, or there is another problem with your vehicle, MUPD will attempt to contact an on-call Physical Facilities staff member for you, who then can approve the original assignment, or re-assign a different vehicle once they arrive. However, MUPD officers can not wait with you until they arrive, but must necessarily go back on patrol or answer other calls. Also, MUPD officers can not wait with you while you contact the original driver, or go back for your driver's license. You may call again once your driver or license is present.
Requesting access to university facilities
In order to book a university facility, you must contact the office directly responsible, to make arrangements for reserving that facility. RESERVING A FACILITY DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN THAT MUPD WILL OPEN IT FOR YOU. MUPD officers MUST have direct, hard-copy approval from a university member directly responsible for the facility, in order to open it for your reservation. Contact the same person you received your reservation from, and CONFIRM that a hard-copy request to open the facility for you, has been sent to our office by campus mail or by fax (871-2264). Due to the nature of academic buildings (computer equipment, sensitive records, chemicals, valuables, etc.,) MUPD officers are under orders NOT to open facilities without specific approval from responsible University person(s).
Usually, most University staff members who are directly responsible for facilities, send requests to the Univerisity Police Departments as a matter of course. However, you should confirm that a request to open your facility has indeed, been sent to us. There is little we can do to help the event you have spent many hours preparing for, if we can not open a facility for you due to lack of approval sent to us, and your group is left standing outside a building we don't have permission to open. Please understand, that MUPD officers are subject to disciplinary action for opening facilities without direct hard-copy approval, so please do not ask us to risk disciplinary action for you. There are also some areas that University Police can NOT open under any circumstances. You may want to contact us yourself, to find out if signed approval has been sent to us or if there will be any problems with your request. You may download an approval form, HERE, which you can take to the person in charge of your desired facility, and which they can sign to give us approval to open it for you. Send it to us by fax, or drop it off at the police station, at least 48 hours in advance of your event to ensure that officer who will be on duty, will receive it.
Whom do you contact for different facilities? Here are some of the most common:
If the facility you have reserved or wish access to is one of the following, please call University Police as soon as possible, since normally MUPD is NOT able to, nor permitted to open these areas:
