The Department of Government and Political Affairs is now accepting applications for its annual Summer British Parliamentary Internship in London, UK. Placement is with the Westminster (House of Parliament) Office of Emily Thornberry, the Labour MP for Islington South and Finsbury in London. MP Thornberry has represented Islington South and Finsbury since the 2005 parliamentary elections. MP Thornberry, a human rights lawyer, has actively worked on issues ranging from inner-city poverty to the environment in the House of Commons. This unpaid, six-week, full-time, internship runs from approximately July 1-August 15, 2008 and carries with it three academic credits in the Government Department. Housing is available through MU’s partner institution – London Metropolitan University – which is located in MP Thornberry’s constituency. The internship is open to declared Government majors with a GPA of at least 3.0. The application process is competitive. Since 2003, the Government Department has placed five MU students in a MP’s office through this summer internship program. In each case, the MU student conducted themselves in a professional manner and in the words of one MP’s Office Manager did “brilliant” jobs. We want to send the same high-caliber intern to represent Millersville in 2008. Applicants should have some background in parliamentary systems (GOVT 221).
In addition, an intern in MP’s Office would be responsible for:
* Drafting of letters, and dealing with telephone enquiries
* Responsible for opening and sorting the post
* Assisting Parliamentary Researcher with general administrative
duties such as photocopying and filing
* Some preparation of speeches and briefings
As one MP’s Parliamentary researcher noted, “The successful candidate will be self-motivated, organised, keen, confident and not afraid to take initiative. You also need to be highly organised, have strong writing skills and be prepared to carry out administrative tasks.”
Applications will be accepted through noon on Friday, February 15, 2008. For an application and/or more information please see Dr. Robert Bookmiller in Fulton House. Dr. Bookmiller can also be reached at 872-3837 or Robert.Bookmiller@millersville.edu.
