English as a Second Language Institute -"Cultural Understanding and teaching Strategies for the ESL Classroom"
June 16-20, 2008 on-campus at Millersville University, Bolger Conference Center/Gordinier Building in Lehr Room
The English as a Second Language Institute uniquely provides administrators, classroom teachers, and ESL teachers with a critical understanding of how schools can take proactive steps at bridging the achievement gap as it relates to linguistically and culturally diverse learners. This institute will count toward the required class EDUC 563 for ESL certification.
This institute will provide participants with the framework with which to develop:
- Cultural and Linguistic understandings to enhance teaching
- Classroom communities that foster language growth
- Scaffolding strategies in the classroom
- Activities appropriate for the various stages of second language acquisition
- Strategies for literacy development
- Strategies for writing development
- Collaborative efforts between the classroom teacher and the ESL teacher
During the ESL Institute attendees will be acquiring knowledge that will address the first training component as identified by the Pennsylvania Department of Education:
- Knowledge of the structure of the English language/ grammar and pronunciation, including lexical, morphological, syntax and phonological components
- Knowledge of language transfer issues for literacy instructions
- Knowledge of the process of literacy development for second language learners and strategies to assist ELLs in the different stages of second language acquisition
- Knowledge to assist ELLs to communicate using verbal and nonverbal language
Institute Objectives: By the conclusion of this institute:
All Participants will be able to begin or expand their knowledge and skills to:
- Use cultural and linguistic understandings to enhance learning for English Language Learners
- Use a variety of strategies to assess language
- Use knowledge of Transfer Theory to facilitate English L2 reading
- Implement strategies for writing in the content areas
- Scaffold instruction
- Determine appropriate language goals in instruction
ESL specialists will be able to begin or expand their knowledge and skills to:
- Make appropriate recommendations to classroom teachers on how to best five English Language Learners access to the curriculum
- Provide support for English Language Learners for reading and writing in the content areas
