Environmental Education Institute - "Cycles in Watershed Systems "

June 16-27, 2008 on-campus at Millersville University, Caputo/Roddy buildings

Cycles in Watershed Systems- Provides middle and high school science teachers with an understanding of the hydrobiogechemical changes occurring as water moves form the atmosphere to ecosystems, and ultimately to groundwater and streams. This institute focuses on the interactions within and between the atmosphere and terrestrial ecosystems of the bilogically active molecules nitrogen, phosphorous, carbon and oxygen. Synthesis of these cycles will be through GIS mapping, field trip measurements, box models, and each participant's development of a classroom exercise.

The next phase of this topic will be offered in summer 2009 and will focus on geochemical cycles in watersheds. It is not imperative that you take both parts I & II, but the sequence is intended to provide a complete and comprehensive description of watersheds.

Institute Objectives:

By the conclusion of this institute, middle and high school science teachers will expand their knowledge about::

  • Atmospheric processes regulating abundance and quality of water
  • GIS mapping of watersheds
  • Nutrient cycles and ecosystems in watersheds
