Pennsylvania Latino Language, Pedagogy, and Culture Immersion Institute in Puerto Rico

We invite you to be a part of the Pennsylvania Latino Language, Pedagogy, and Culture Immersion Institute sponsored by Millersville University 's Office of Global Education and Partnerships and the Education Foundations Department in partnership with the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez.

The Institute uniquely provides school teachers and administrators a cultural immersion experience in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico that provides 24 hours of intensive instruction in adult practical Spanish language; workshops on the history, geography and culture of Puerto Rico; the cultural dynamics of the classroom, the curriculum, the family and the community of Puerto Rican schools and children; and educational field trips to cultural sites and to local schools. No Spanish language background is required.

Institute Objectives:

By the conclusion of this institute each participate will

  • Demonstrate basic proficiency in everyday Spanish
  • Identify key aspects of Puerto Rican culture, history and geography
  • Comprehend the cultural intersection of language, child, family, and community with school curriculum and pedagogy.
  • Apply new knowledge and skills on the above to a curriculum and classroom project to be taught in his/her home school.
