INSTITUTE THEME
The theme for this Institute is the educational intersection of language, culture, and pedagogy and the impact of these factors on successful student learning and on teaching. Educators who participate will gain a basic understanding of the Spanish language and will develop a personal understanding of the impact of Latino culture on the dynamics of the classroom. Educators will be able to apply these knowledge, skills, and understandings to their own classrooms, schools, and to the instruction of children who are Latino/a.
OVERVIEW
University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez will conduct the language, culture, and pedagogy instruction. Millersville University faculty will facilitate the workshops, events, and the application and assessment of curriculum and instruction within the participant's classroom and/or school.
Nine morning sessions (Week 1: Monday through Friday; Week 2: Monday through Thursday) will be dedicated to practical Spanish language instruction at the beginner, intermediate and advanced level.
Three afternoon workshops on 1) the history, geography, and culture of Puerto Rico; 2) the cultural dynamics of family & community in Puerto Rico; and 3) the cultural dynamics of classroom & school in Puerto Rico.
Two afternoons of school visits.
Two extensive educational and cultural field trips.
Long unscheduled sightseeing weekend from 8/1, afternoon, to 8/3, evening. Participants may stay in Mayagüez or tour other parts of the island on their own.
Final day in Old San Juan for educational activities and sightseeing.
