~Millersville University participates in "Rush to Recycle" contest.
Beginning on Monday, October 7, and ending Friday November 30, M.U. will partake in a state-wide recycling competition.  Over the eight week period, it will be determined which of the 15 participating Pennsylvania colleges and universities can increase its recycling percentages by the greatest number.  The winning University will receive press, recognition from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and a "huge" DEP sponsored social event.
Please do your part by recycling all waste that can be deterred from the trash. THANK YOU!!

~New York City sets bad example by prioritizing profit over environmentalmorality.  Read NY times article here.    This issue is especially relevant to those of us who live in Pennslyvania. We are the largest recipient of New York City's immense and continuous flow of trash.  It is important to uphold environmental morality while managing financial issues.

~Millersville University to recycle fluorescent light tubes. Fluorescent tubes (48") contain 20-40 mg each of mercury, a neurotoxin known to cause developmental problems and a host of other human diseases. Millersville University is developing a procedure to collect and ship spent tubes to a reprocessor, who will recover the mercury, thereby keeping it out of the ambient environment. Ironically, by producing light more efficiently than normal incandescent bulbs, fluorescents save electricity, most of which is generated in coal fired plants that are themselves a major source of mercury pollution. So choose your poison. Or, better yet, do your best to conserve electricity.

~Lancaster area ranked 22nd in the U.S. for ozone pollution. The American Lung Association has issued a failing grade of "F" to the Lancaster area, ranking it the 22nd worst area in the U.S. for ozone pollution. Ground level ozone causes respiratory damage to humans, children and the elderly being especially susceptible. Ozone is also implicated in free radical tissue damage in humans, other animals and plants. Recycling saves electricity and electrical generation is a large source of ozone, as are automobiles. So, before driving off in an oversized single occupancy vehicle, or consuming electricity, or throwing your recyclables in the wrong place, please consider the consequences of your behavior. Conservation and recycling go a long way in protecting health.
