PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Millersville University is committed to fostering an academic community where individuals enjoy an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust. Millersville reaffirms its desire to create an environment for all students and employees which is humane, free of violence and discrimination, and supports, nurtures, and rewards career and educational goals on the basis of ability and performance. To these ends, I take this opportunity to make clear the University’s position on the subject of sexual harassment.

Sexual harassment is a form of discrimination which is both reprehensible and unlawful. In any of its forms, sexual harassment is prohibited and will not be tolerated. It violates the special bonds of intellectual dependence and trust on campus, and undermines all collegial relationships. Further, it is antithetical to the creation of an atmosphere conducive to learning.

All members of the university community are encouraged to resolve conflicts fairly and amicably. Some circumstances will require that formal procedures be invoked. These procedures are outlined in the University’s sexual harassment policy as revised in December 1998, which identifies procedures to be followed when a member of the University community believes that this policy may have been violated. If you feel you have been sexually harassed, you are encouraged to seek assistance using resources identified in the University’s sexual harassment policy. You can take steps to have such actions stopped.

Because every supervisor and employee must share some responsibility for creating and maintaining a harassment-free environment, we are providing this program for you. The program allows you to assess your knowledge of sexual harassment, who it affects, and the consequences of this behavior. It will also certify your understanding upon successful completion of the tutorial.

I strongly encourage you to carefully review and participate in this program.

Sincerely,

Dr. Francine G. McNairy
President
