Tutor: Procedures and Responsibilities

The following is a list of procedures and responsibilities for all tutors providing service through our office.

  1. Upon assignment of a student for individual tutoring, you must:
    1. Be available for a brief initial meeting with your tutee sometime between 9:30 am and 5:00 pm Monday through Thursday and 9:30 am and 3:00 pm on Friday. You only need to do this one time for each tutee you are assigned and you will be paid for a half-hour for this time.
    2. Meet your tutee for the initial meeting in the Tutoring Center (1st Floor of Lyle Hall).
    3. Arrange a regular time and place to meet, exchange phone numbers and e-mail addresses and acquire information regarding the tutee’s professor.
    4. Meet with the tutee’s professor(s) to discuss course content and return the Professor Contact Form to the Tutoring Center with your next payroll time sheet.
    5. Report to the Tutoring Center to pick up and turn in payroll time sheets by noon on the last day of the pay period.
    6. Contact us ASAP if you have any problems, questions, or suggestions.
  2. Upon assignment for group tutoring, you must:
    1. Report to your room assignment on time and stay for all of your scheduled hours.
    2. Provide “Tutor Request Forms” to tutees who have not completed them.
    3. Let us know ASAP if more than five students show up at a time, so that we can adequately staff the room.
    4. Report to the tutoring office to pick up and turn in payroll time sheets by noon on the last day of the pay period.
    5. Contact us if you have any questions or suggestions.
    6. You are entitled to receive 15 minutes of preparation time for every hour that you tutor. We will calculate and add on the prep time to avoid confusion.
  3. If you are unable to handle a tutoring assignment, you must let us know immediately upon receiving an assignment.
  4. You are allowed to tutor every week for up to one hour per credit for individual tutoring. For example, if you tutor someone in a 3.0 credit course, you are allowed to tutor that individual for 3 hours a week for that course. (See Tutoring Coordinator for additional hours for AIM FOR SUCCESS students – formerly PACE students).
  5. If a tutee misses two sessions of individual tutoring without notifying you ahead of time or calls at the last minute to cancel without a good reason, please let us know. Your time is valuable, and a student who repeatedly misses sessions is not serious about wanting help. We will contact the tutee and let them know that their tutor arrangement will be discontinued and that they will need to reapply for a tutor. We will try to find you a new tutee A.S.A.P. If a student does not show up for an individual tutoring session, wait 15 minutes and you will be paid for the 15 minutes of that session. Remember to write “no show” on your time sheet, so that we can pay you for your time.
  6. Tutees are to show up for tutoring sessions with specific questions or problems. You are there to clarify information, answer questions, explain problem-solving methods, and provide similar help. Tutees may not ask you to do problems, reports, or other assignments for them. Each tutee is aware of this stipulation, so if he/she is not making the effort, please let us know.

**Bi-weekly time sheets and group tutoring session log sheets must be turned in no later than Friday, the last day of the pay period, at noon. They may be placed under the door if the office is closed. Failure to turn in time sheets by this deadline will result in a postponement of your pay.
