Station Three:  Joseph Smith

Joseph Smith:  He hid fugitives in a vault under his barn bridge.  The door was in the stable hidden under straw and hay.  The most he could keep in there at one time was thirteen slaves.  To the South, Smith was called the 'Black Abolitionist."

Smith Home:  A trap door was hidden in the barn.  The home was always filled with slaves passing along the Underground Railroad.

Smith Family:  The family provided the slaves with clothes to wear, and food to eat.  This was essential because the cold weather prevented the growth of crops on farms.

Weather:  It was still snowing in Lancaster County.  Slaves should be prepared for the weather.
