Nutrition Products and
Popular Toy Models

A Professional Development Workshop Presented By :
Star Campbell, MS, Med, RD, LDN and contractor
to the PA Department of Education
Determine the economic and nutritional value of commercial sports drinks and protein powders, shakes and bars as well as convenience foods in meeting the nutritional needs of athletes and other students by using tools such as scatterplots and whisker plots. Use an allometric equation to scale Barbie, Ken and Mad Max and compare the results to actual adult measurements and then discuss the implications in regards to body image. Conduct a z-test to determine the foods in which there has been a significant change in consumption by teenagers over the past decade and discuss the implications in regards to increasing weights in school children. The lessons demonstrated in the workshop come from a packet which will be given to each school district represented. Star Campbell is an
independent nutrition education consultant residing in State College, PA. She consults for various organizations, such
as the Pennsylvania Department of Education, in the area of nutrition
education, teacher training, and curriculum development. She has developed several middle school and
high school interdisciplinary curricula for the Pennsylvania Dept. of
Education. Her most recent curricula
are “Sports Nutrition Lessons for Adolescents,” and “Body Weight and Body Image
Lessons for Adolescents,” copyright 2001.
Star was a faculty
member in the department of Food Science in the 1999-2000 academic year and in
the department of Nutrition at Penn State from 1983-1995. Star has been a consultant to school
districts and private academies, Fortune 500 companies, and international
health organizations.
Star’s passions are
developing new nutrition education materials, conducting teacher training
workshops, traveling around the world, eating new foods, and race walking. Star likes to race walk marathons and has
completed six marathons and numerous half marathons in the past 4 years.
