Catalog Description: Investigates the nature of mathematics, the contribution of different cultures toward the development of mathematics, and the role of mathematics across cultures and societies. Study of how various cultures understand and use mathematics. Participants will gain sufficient understanding of Ethnomathematics to be able to create classroom projects in multicultural mathematics.
The workshop is intended for middle and high school teachers of mathematics.
Rationale: According to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics, all teachers of mathematics should develop their perspectives on the nature of mathematics, the contribution of different cultures toward the development of mathematics, and the role of mathematics across cultures and societies.
In this workshop, the participants will develop the ability to approach the study of mathematics from a rich multicultural point of view. Participants will find an alternative and indirect way of teaching and learning mathematics.
