Millersville is the only institution in southeastern Pennsylvania outside the Philadelphia area to grant these three advanced degrees in history: Baccalaureates in Liberal Arts and in Education, and a Master of Arts in History.

The department offers a quality program in either Liberal Arts or Education. Our faculty, which is recognized as being dedicated to teaching, historical research, and the profession, maintains a strong commitment to scholarship. In addition to offering a wide range of courses in the traditional fields of United States history and European history, the department also offers courses on Africa, Latin America, the Atlantic world, the Middle East, Violence, Women, and the Holocaust. Many history majors complete internships at non-profits, archives, museums, libraries, and other entities. Undergraduate students may also qualify to take courses in the history department's Master of Arts program to enhance their undergraduate experiences.
Extracurricular events are vital for a thorough education. The department hosts a variety of conferences and colloquia, especially the Conference on the Holocaust and Genocide, one of the longest-running and most highly regarded in the U.S. There is a student-run History Club and a local chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the national History honor society. In addition, the department annually presents a variety of academic awards to students majoring in history.

Career Opportunities
As well as learning about a wide array of topics, places, and times, history majors, whether pursuing a liberal arts (B.A.) or education/teaching (B.S.E.) degree, acquire important, portable skills, especially in research, writing, presentation, and critical thinking.
