McCaskey Tornado Career Corps

What is the Tornado Career Corps and AmeriCorps?

McCaskey Tornado Career Corps is a three year AmeriCorps VISTA project, through Campus Compact of New York & Pennsylvania (CCNYPA), designed to combat poverty by increasing students' access to higher education.  Millersville University's Experiential Learning and Career Management (ELCM) is the host site of an AmeriCorps VISTA project to build and strengthen the University's partnership with the School District of Lancaster. The project seeks to train Millersville students who are McCaskey graduates to serve and support students in their home community and high school.

Mission
To prepare School District of Lancaster students for their college or career experiences by providing them with the resources and support they need to be successful in their lives after graduation.

Project Layout
Approximately 12-15 Millersville students, preferably graduates from McCaskey High School, are selected and trained each year to serve as Career Corps Educators. The Career Corps Educators provide services to students enrolled at the McCaskey High School Campus, the Lancaster Cyber Program, Phoenix Academy and the Lancaster Partnership Program (LPP). They work with students individually and in small groups by mentoring student participants in externship/job shadow experiences and leading workshops, panels and presentations on college and career readiness.

Career Corps Educators receive a $375 stipend, funded through the Lancaster County Community Foundation’s BB&T Economic Growth Fund, at the end of each semester for the completion of a minimum of 50 service hours.
