Parent/Family Orientation 2020

Welcome Parents and Family Members!

This is an exciting time for you and your student! Millersville University wants to create a strong partnership with you; one that best supports your student in reaching their educational objectives.

Unfortunately, the current health crisis has negatively impacted our popular on-campus summer program for parents and families; we will not be able to host you in person this year.

MU To-Go Events

We are working with the Admissions Office to offer seven "MU To-Go" events for your student throughout the summer (see the dates below). In addition to the content for your student, we are including content specific to you as well!

  • Stop in the Hospitality Suite! Have a quick question for us? Drop in at the Hospitality Suite Zoom Room any time between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to connect with the MU To-Go Team and other "special guests." We'll do our best to answer your questions, identify upcoming Zoom sessions or direct you to the best content expert.
  • Is this your first college student? Even if this is your second (or third...fourth?) student, this session can prove helpful. Faculty from the MU Center for Counseling and Human Development will offer a presentation on  "Managing the Transition" to assist you in understanding some of the changes you may expect in your student - and in you  - over the next few years.
  • What is FERPA? One of the biggest changes for your student will be the amount of information the University shares directly with you. Federal regulations, known as the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, or "FERPA," limits third-party access to a student's academic record. Professional staff from the MU Registrar's Office will review the Act and explain how best to keep communication flowing between you and your student.

How do I join?

Your student will receive invitations to participate in the MU To-Go events from the Admissions Office throughout the summer. We encourage you to talk with your student about the sessions being offered - for them and for you - and have them register you for the sessions you are interested in attending. They will receive an email with the Zoom links to the sessions they register for. Ask them to pass the Zoom links for the parent and family sessions on to you.

MU To-Go Dates

Note that students are not required to select any one day to participate. They might attend one Zoom session early in the summer on accessing their online student accounts, and then decide to attend another one, perhaps on "Navigating Degree Requirements," at a later date; we want students to reach for information when they need it; and we'll be there for them. MU To-Go Events are being held on:

  • Friday, May 15
  • Thursday, June 4
  • Friday, June 19
  • Monday, June 29
  • Wednesday, July 15
  • Tuesday, July 28
  • Monday, August 10

Additional Programs for Parents and Family

We plan to offer additional orientation content, exclusive to parents and family, after June 1, 2020 through our online pre-orientation known as the Marauder Arrival Program, or MAP. Programming will consist of recorded lectures and presentations as well as resources you can use to support your student's experience at MU. You'll be able to access the MAP from this page.
