 Fellowships:

  • Michele Santamaria completed her term as an Association of Research Libraries Leadership and Career Development Program Fellow. The LCDP is a yearlong experience that prepares mid-career librarians from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups to take on leadership roles in their careers and in the profession at large. The LCDP addresses the lack of representation of BIPOC professionals in leadership ranks within academic and research institutions and other communities of practice.
  • Carrie Smith, Faculty Coordinator of CPSSC, has been accepted into the Faculty Leaders Program for 2023-2024 at the Pardee RAND Graduate School. The Faculty Leaders Program is designed to “help faculty members strengthen their skills as teachers, mentors, researchers, and advocates of effective public policy and policy analysis.”

Awards:

  • Jennifer Frank, a faculty affiliate at CPSSC, has been named the Social Work Educator of the Year by the NASW PA Chapter.

 Journal Editorships

  • Professors Tatiana Pashkova-Balkenhol and Kerrie Farkas serve as editors for:
    • The Engage for Change Journal, a community-based publication that aims to contribute to public knowledge and public engagement by harnessing the collaborative potential and expert knowledge of faculty, students, and residents on social, political, and economic issues affecting the Lancaster County region, has published fourteen articles focused on gender justice in its second issue. https://blogs.millersville.edu/engageforchangejournal/
    • The Made in Millersville Journal, a digital conference proceedings journal that captures and preserves student projects presented at the annual Made in Millersville Conference, has published forty-seven articles across multiple disciplines in its 2023 issue https://www.mimjournal.com/, including the work of eight honors students.

National and International Recognition of Faculty:

  • Katarzyna Jakubiak’s (English & World Languages) short story “Made of Sugar” won the 2021 Rebecca Mitchell Tarumoto Short Fiction Prize from the literary magazine Blackbird.
  • Stacey Irwin’s (Communication&Theatre) documentary Raising Faith: Stories about Dyslexia received honors and awards in a number of film festivals including Vesuvius International Film Fest, Hong Kong Indie Film Festival, London Indie Short Festival, Berlin Shorts, Waco Family and Faith Film Festival, Hollywood on the Tiber Film Awards, Onyko Films Awards and Bestlov Film Festival.
  • Robert Horton (Music) won first place in the American Guild of Organists National Competition in Organ improvisation in Kansas City, Missouri.

  • Katarzyna Jakubiak (English&World Languages) published a collection of creative nonfiction titled Obce Stany (“Alien States”) with Biuro Literackie in Poland.
  • Micheál Houlahan (Music) and Dr. Philip Tacka (Music) published Choral Artistry and Choral Sight Reading: A Kodály Perspective for Middle School to College Level Choirs (Oxford University Press).

  • Lowery Woodall (Communication&Theatre) published Grappling with Representation in the WWE: Exploring Issues of Diversity and Inclusion in World Wrestling Entertainment (Lexington Books)
  • Tanya Kevorkian (History) published her second book, Music and Urban Life in Baroque Germany, with the University of Virginia Press in Fall 2022. The book is a comparative study of musical life in five towns, Augsburg, Munich, Gotha, Erfurt, and Leipzig from about 1650 to 1750. It reconstructs the social interactions that funded and otherwise shaped musical performance on the street, at civic occasions, at weddings, and at other events. It focuses on ordinary performers, hosts, and audiences as well as elites. Tower guards, formerly little understood, were a key urban occupation and building block of musical culture, as were the better-known town musicians. The book is based on extensive archival research conducted in Germany from 2008 to 2018.

  • Victoria Khiterer (History) published “Unwelcome Return Home: Jews, anti-Semitism and the Housing Problem in Post-war Kyiv” in Eastern European Holocaust Studies.
  • Professor Heidi Leitzke‘s (Art & Design) artwork "Rhododendron Blooms in May" was published in Textiel Plus – a Dutch international magazine focused on contemporary textile art.
  • Kaitlin Mondello (English & World Languages) published "Romantic Literature and Ecofeminism" in The Routledge Handbook of Ecofeminism and Literature.
  • Xun Pan (Music) performed two solo concerts in Italy, and he was invited to the prestigious Hunter International Music Festival where he taught chamber music to participants from seven countries and performed all of Brahms’ Piano Trios.

  • Dr. Steven Kennedy (Chemistry) has been recognized with a certificate in Effective College Instruction from the Association of College and University Educators and the American Council on Education (9/13/2022).
  • Dr. Kelly Kuhns (Nursing) has been appointed PI to the Opioid Workforce Education and Development Grant for the 4th year extension (9/1/2022).
  • Dr. Kelly Kuhns (Nursing) was a finalist for the 2022 Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing Education
  • Dr. Dawn Lambert (Nursing) was the recipient of the prestigious National Association of School Nurses (NASN), Pennsylvania School Nurse Administrator of the Year Award for 2023
  • Dr. Erin Moss is currently serving a 3-year term (2020-2023) on the Mathematical Association of America’s Committee on Faculty and Departments. This committee researches and writes Best Practices statements to serve as guidelines for faculty and departmental decision-making in the areas of curriculum, teaching, technology, assessment, and DEI (10/6/2022).
  • Dr. Cayleigh Minter was nominated for: Advanced Practice Provider Award at UPMC West Shore Hospital’s Nurse's Week (2/1/23), Advanced Practice RN Category Award at UPMC West Shore Nursing Excellence Recognition Award Ceremony (5/11/23), and UPMC APP Recognition Award (7/9/23).  Dr. Minter was also promoted to Senior Advanced Practice Provider (June 2023).

  • Dr. Eric Ryndock. Development of a colorimetric loop-mediated isothermal amplification diagnostic assay for deer tick virus. BioOne (2023). This a low-cost method for nucleic acid detection and is seen as an alternative to the gold-standard PCR method. Deer tick virus (also called Powassan virus) is an emerging human pathogen spread by certain species of ticks.

  • Made in Millersville: Over 100 SCTE students presented papers at 2023 MiM Symposium on Tuesday, April 11 (more than half of presenters from SCTE)
  • Research: 50+ Students will be recognized at the annual Dr. Edward C. Shane Undergraduate Student Research Recognition Ceremony this afternoon
  • More than 20 UG Students participated in nationally competitive Summer REUs and in highly competitive federal and state internship and institute appointments.

College of Education and Human Services

  • Deborah Tamakloe (SPED) was named “Millersville University Educator of the Year” for the 2022—23 school year. This highly selective award is based on student and peer recommendations and a detailed application process.
  • Jason Petula (EMEE) accepted and completed an Elementary Engineering Workshop at the Pennsylvania State University July 12-14, 2023. He was awarded $4000 to purchase K-5 engineering modules, which will be used to offer a new Summer Institute next year related to the upcoming new Science, Technology & Engineering, Environmental Literacy & Sustainability (STEELS) standards. The curricular materials will also be used with planned revisions to the science methods courses.
  • Governor Josh Shapiro appointed Joe Behun (PSYC) to serve as a member of the State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselors. The Pennsylvania Senate voted unanimously to confirm the nomination of Dr. Behun on June 29, 2023.
  • Aileen Hower (EMEE), Miriam Witmer (EDFN) & Abdulsalami Ibrahim (EDFN) were awarded a Pennsylvania Department of Education Innovative Teacher Prep2Practice Grant, https://www.education.pa.gov/Teachers%20%20Administrators/Teacher%20Quality/Grants/Pages/InnovativeTeacherAwardList.aspx
  • Jen Frank (SOWK) was named the PA Social Work Educator of the Year by NAWS-PA. Frank was chosen partially because she is gifted at connecting theory with practice. She often brings her students out of the classroom and immerses them in the issues currently confronting the world.
  • Deborah Tamakloe (SPED), Josh Belice, Lara Willox, Richard Mehrenberg (SPED), and Susannah Boyle (SPED) were awarded the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s Accelerated Program for PK-12 Special Education Teacher Certification Grant has been approved for funding in the amount of $100,000.00.
  • Charlton Wolfgang (EMEE), was awarded the Neuber-Pregler Award at the 2022 PAGE (Pennsylvania Association for Gifted Education) Conference. The PAGE organization gives the award to honor and acknowledge an individual's extensive contributions to gifted education in Pennsylvania.
  • Marc Felizzi (SOWK) published an article in the Sport Social Work Journal, along with MSW graduate Shiloh Hagerty. The article "The Impact of Authoritarian Coaching Styles on Athletes’ Anxious States", was published in the Winter 2022 edition of the Journal.
  • Andrew Bland (PSYC) was interviewed by Newsweek magazine based on his 2018 research on Chapman's love languages. Excerpts from the interview were published on April 30, 2023.
  • Daniel Keefer (WSSD) won a Student Choice Award in recognition of his commitment to students by fostering global engagement and supporting student success. This award was from the Office of International Programs and Services (IPS). It was for his WSSD 410 International Sport Organization and Industry Tour course that brought students to Puerto Rico to visit various sport-related venues during spring break.

Lombardo College of Business

  • In October, Dr. Joseph Galante (Department of Accounting and Finance) led a group of Millersville students to the Great Lakes Academy of Legal Studies in Business conference, held at the University of Akron. Business Administration majors Leah Miksa ’24 and Samuel Bailey ’24, both presented, and Samuel won the Best Student Paper award for “Bootleg Records: Learning to Live with Illegal Music Recordings”.
