Name: Elisabeth Cunningham
Hometown: Huntingtown, MD
Anticipated graduation: May 2021
Major: Mathematics with a concentration in Statistics
Minors: Computer Science and Psychology
Inspirations (for major, research, internship):
I have always had a strong love for math, even when I was in elementary school. It was just something that came to mevery naturally. So, when I went to pick a degree, I knew that it had to be math related. However, I actually started as a Mathematics Education major, and it wasn’t until one professor told me that I need to look into adding statistics to my degree and I started to take those course that I realized how much I love statistics.
Highlights (from courses/internship/research):
The highlights from my courses have really been being able to learn from great professors who not only have great knowledge of the courses they are teaching but also care so much about the students that are in their class. Another highlight has been getting to work with so many other talented students that have helped push me and develop my own mathematical skills.
Takeaway (from courses/internship/research):
The biggest things that have taken away from the courses I have taken at Millersville is the idea that we should always be asking questions and it is okay to be wrong because we get to learn from our mistakes. Also when you are faced with something that is challenging you just have to start with some small first step, and a lot of times this will help you come up with where to go next.
Advice (for incoming freshman in your shoes):
I would advise the incoming freshmen to get involved with everything you are interested. You never know how that may impact your life. There you might create lifelong friends, or you might find a career you have never even thought of. Also, get to know your professors and let them know what you want to do with your degree. They have seen may students going though the same place you are. I had one professor tell me I should look into a statistics concentration and that completely change my career goals.
Aspirations (upon graduation):
I want to either attend graduate school to further my study of statistics or start my career in DC in Data Analytics or Statistics.
What has been the most significant and/or exciting aspect of your work?
The most exciting part of working with Mathematics and Statistics is how complex and evolving the fields are. Every year more and more companies are looking at ways that mathematics and statistics can be used to advance their business.
Scholarships awarded while attending Millersville University
I was awarded the Edna Myers Scholarship, Class of 1928 Award, and the Williamson Math Scholarship while here at Millersville.
