The Social Workers Are Essential Fund

Social workers provide essential services to individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities to maximize functioning and effect positive change. Social workers are key stakeholders in ensuring overall community well-being.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) lists social work as one the fastest growing professions in the United States. The number of U.S. social workers is expected to rise to more than 800,000 in 2029, up 13 percent from 2019. Current social challenges—aging population, behavioral health needs, substance/opioid use disorder, youth violence, access to healthcare, and systemic racism—have contributed to the increased need for social workers.

Millersville University School of Social Work is dedicated to preparing its graduates to respond to these challenges. We also recognize the importance in eliminating barriers our students experience for them to maximize their educational outcomes and position them well for the workforce.

We know the positive benefits of access to high impact practices (e.g., internships, study abroad, research, living learning community) while completing a degree program. Yet not every student can participate in these practices due to financial constraints.

In honor of Social Work Month and the essential role of social workers in responding to the needs of individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities, the Millersville University School of Social Work has set up the “Social Workers are Essential Fund” to support our students with:

  • cost of clearances
  • textbook fees
  • study abroad fees
  • service learning and internships
  • professional development (e.g., conference registration fees, advocacy day)

Support us in supporting our students and give to the School of Social Work throughout the month of March.
