Why Study This Program?

Discover an exciting direction and marketable skill set within your chosen major through a minor in English as a Second Language. You will develop an appreciation for the world's languages as you study under passionate professors and learn how to connect with second-language learners. Courses are designed to help students identify features of English, discuss language skills and apply teaching methods. 

The English as a Second Language program is available as an option within the English major or as a minor to any MU student. English majors who graduate from this program receive a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in English degree with an option in English as a Second Language (ESL).

What Will You Learn?

English as a Second Language students experience the breadth of the English field while dedicating themselves to the specific study of ESL. You will explore the history of language, practice literary analysis, develop an understanding of world literature and more through a diverse selection of English electives. ESL courses at Millersville University include Introduction to Language Study; Transformational Grammar; Applied Linguistics; and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

In addition to English as a Second Language, English majors can opt to minor in American literature, British literature, journalism, comparative literature, linguistics or writing studies.
