Art & Design Ι Artist Talks

Fall 2020 Ι MARK YOUR CALENDARS ...

In addition to upholding the tradition of hiring special guest speakers to promote their own disciplines, faculty members of our department have put together their own series of artist talks.  Whether they are promoting a well known artist through an artist talk, or teaching the acquisition of new skills through a workshop, the faculty members from the Department of Art & Design bring pride in illustrating to our students that the skills they are learning in the classroom can transform into lucrative careers beyond their education.

  • 11/11.2020 @ 6:00 pm Ι ecofeminism(s)

What is the relationship between feminism and the climate crisis? How have women artists responded to man-made climate change over the past 50 years? Monika Fabijanska, curator of the nationally acclaimed exhibition ecofeminism(s) held in NYC in 2020, will discuss the concept of ecofeminism(s) and artists’ responses to environmental crises.

Hailed by Hyperallergic, The New York Times, and Art in America, ecofeminism(s) explores the legacy of some of the pioneers of ecofeminist art:  Helène Aylon, Betsy Damon, Agnes Denes, Bilge Friedlaender, Ana Mendieta, Aviva Rahmani, and Cecilia Vicuña, and  how  their  ideas and strategies are continued, developed  or opposed by younger generations–Andrea Bowers, Eliza Evans, Sonya Kelliher-Combs, Carla Maldonado, Mary Mattingly, Jessica Segall, and Hanae Utamura.  It also features the ecofeminist works of Lynn Hershman Leeson and Barbara Kruger, who escape these categories.

Monika Fabijanska is a New York City-based art historian and independent curator who specializes in women's and feminist art. She curated the exhibition ecofeminism(s) (Thomas Erben Gallery, 2020), accompanied by discussions with artists and scholars. Her critically acclaimed exhibition The Un-Heroic Act: Representations of Rape in Women's Contemporary Art in the U.S. was ranked the fifth best NYC art show in 2018 by Hyperallergic. monikafabijanska.com
