Center for Public Scholarship
Mission
The Center for Public Scholarship brings together teams of faculty, students, and members of the community to engage collaboratively in research for public purposes. Aiming to leverage the ability for shared research on public issues, the Center for Public Scholarship lends assistance and expertise in identifying research issues, developing research designs, collecting data, writing up results, disseminating results, and working with policymakers and practitioners to resolve issues affecting local, regional, and global communities.
Goals
Key figures and organizations of client communities are actively sought to play a significant role in helping to define and prioritize the issues on which such research focuses. Goals for the Center include the following:
- Establish a Polling Center to research perceived community needs, quality of services, and attitudes of the public in order to help initiate and guide public policy decision-making
- Conduct, publish, and disseminate results of sponsored research on regional concerns through online and print communication, conferences, mass media educational communication, teleconferencing, and cross-cultural consulting and training
- Organize and direct focused research on public issues and develop new models, provide expertise, and create linkages to support public impact activities
- Help raise the level of public awareness about and responsiveness to public issues
- Coordinate faculty and visitor colloquia
- Offer funding opportunities for individual faculty members, visitors, students and student organizations to subsidize research activities
Activities
Research activities and projects for the Center include but are not limited to the following:
- the persistent and widening economic and social disparities across class, ethnic and racial lines
- the political and social consequences of declining community engagement and political participation
