The placement exam is a short test to determine the level of proficiency in the language. The beginning course of enrollment will be advised based on the score of the exam. A placement test in French, German and/or Spanish is required for incoming FL majors and current MU students declaring a foreign language major or minor. The placement test is also available to students who would like to begin their studies at the intermediate or higher level. You will be able to take it from home via the Internet. Please complete the online registration form which will come back to the department; we will then contact you via e-mail with a password and the link to the placement test.
Please note, students who wish to take a foreign language at the 101 or 102 elementary level do not need to take the placement exam. If you've had 0-1 year of high school FORL, we recommend that you sign up for 101; with 2 years of foreign language study, we recommend that you register for 102. If you are interested in placement at the Elementary 102 level, please complete the online placement form requesting placement at that level based on your previous language experience. Your request will be reviewed and you will be contacted via email with a response to your request. If you have any further questions, please contact:
Foreign Language Simulated Oral Proficiency Interviews (SOPI) and Computerized Oral Proficiency Interview (COPI)
The Department of Foreign Languages expects that their majors will have reached an ACTFL proficiency level of Advanced Low by the first semester of their senior year. In order to check their progress, the students are tested at the sophomore level, using a short version of the SOPI (Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview). Students are again tested at the senior level. French and German BA students take long version of the SOPI (Simulated Oral Proficiency Interview). Spanish BA students take the COPI (Computerized Oral Proficiency Interview). For registration, please click here.
BSE students and post-baccalaureate students seeking certification in French, German, or Spanish must take the OPI/WPT (Oral Proficiency Interview and Writing Proficiency Test). In order to receive certification and graduate from Millersville University, students must reach the Advanced Low level on the OPI and the Intermediate High level on the WPT. For registration, please visit the Millersville University Testing Center. Once you have registered for the OPI/WPT with the Testing Center, click here to complete our online form informing us that you are registered for the OPI/WPT.
