Middle State 2020 Self-Study Process

Millersville launched its 2020 self-study process on Friday, December 15, 2017 with the first meeting of the 2020 Middle States Steering Committee (MSSC).   THe first task of the MSSC will be to create the self-study design which will include structure, institutional prioriites and self-study outcomes, and a preliminary evidence inventory. 

The 2020 Middle States Self-Study process will be led by the Coordinating Team:

  • Dr. Laurie Hanich, Professor, Educational Foundations (Co-Chair)
  • Dr. Lisa Shibley, Assistant Vice President, Institutional Assessment and Planning (Interim Co-Chair and Coordinator)

Steering Committee membership includes the co-chairs of the four working groups:

Working Group on Standard 1 (Mission and Goals) and Standard 6 (Planning, Resources, and Institutional Improvement)

  • Mr. Scott Anderson (Associate Professor, Library)
  • Dr. Victor DeSantis (Dean, College of Graduate Studies and Adult Learning; Associate Provost, Civic and Community Engagement)

Working Group on Standard 2 (Ethics and Integrity) and Standard 7 (Goverance, Leadership, and Administration)

  • Dr. Jennifer Wood (Associate Professor, Communication and Theatre)
  • Ms. Melanie DeSantis (Executive Director, Human Resources)

Working Group on Standard 3 (Design and Delivery of the Student Learning Experience) and Standard 5 (Educational Effectiveness Assessment)

  • Dr. Lynn Marquez (Professor, Geology and General Education Coordinator)
  • Dr. George Drake (Dean, College of Education and Human Services)

Working Group on Standard 4 (Support of the Student Experience)

  • Dr. David Henriques (Assistant Professor, Academic and Advisement Center & Director)
  • Dr. Charity Welch (Assistant Dean, College of Graduate Studies and Adult Learning)

Every ten years Millersville University must reaffirm its accreditation with MSCHE.  This process requires the University to demonstrate compliance with 14 standards as defined by the Characteristics of Excellence. Through the University’s self-study process we must demonstrate compliance while also helping to “rediscover” what makes Millersville the outstanding institution it is and what we should consider for future directions. 

As described below, our self-study process lead to the creation of "Rediscover Millersville: The 2010 Self Study" document.

Rediscover Millersville: 2010 Self-Study Design

Millersville embraces the arrival for this decennial review as an opportunity to renew our commitment to engage the University community in conversation about the future of our institution. As an institution, we believe that the comprehensive model will provide the most robust review while allowing us to build on the self-reflective research which led to our newly adopted Strategic Directions.

The Self-Study Design submitted to MSCHE and discussed at the April 11, 2008 MSCHE Liaison Visit with Dr. Robert Schneider, is available here in pdf format.

Self-Study Outcomes

The University will benefit greatly from the comprehensive review self-study process as we seek to gain reaffirmation of accreditation with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. The four prioritized outcomes that guide us through the process and will lead to improve our overall effectiveness are outlined in more detail here.

Self-Study Organization

Over 150 faculty, staff and students are involved in the Rediscover Millersville 2010 Self-Study. This comprehensive review is organized to facilitate an analytical review of institutional effectiveness: providing insights into Millersville’s current status and creating opportunities for growth. To facilitate the self-study process, a coordinating team leads the process with support from a steering committee and 11 working groups.
