IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR F/J Students at MU - DHS Final Rule Postponed by Federal Court Order

On September 14, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts issued a preliminary injunction postponing the effective date of the Department of Homeland Security's Final Rule,“ Establishing a Fixed Time Period of Admission and an Extension of Stay Procedure for Nonimmigrant Academic Students, Exchange Visitors, and Representatives of Foreign Information Media,” following an August 18, 2026 lawsuit filed by the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, NAFSA: Association of International Educators, and other plaintiffs. Although the Final Rule was scheduled to take effect on September 15, 2026, the court order temporarily halts its implementation until legal proceedings conclude, leaving current duration of status (D/S) regulations in effect until further notice. The IPS office will actively monitor this case as it unfolds and update our website and community as new developments arise.
