Foundations Bloc Information

The following courses are taken in the Foundations Bloc:

Secondary Education Majors (SECED):

  • EDFN 211: Foundations of Modern Education
  • EDFN 241: Psychological Foundations of Teaching

Early Childhood Educ Majors (ERCH):

  • EDFN 211: Foundations of Modern Education
  • EDFN 241: Psychological Foundations of Teaching
  • ERCH 225: Reading Foundations

Early Childhood/Special Educ Dual Certification (ECSP):

  • EDFN 211: Foundations of Modern Education

  • SPED 237: Applied Foundations of Contemporary SPED

Students register for Foundations Bloc courses in the same sections. Classes are held two days per week during a 2 ½ hour bloc.

Important Note: Secondary Education students in morning Foundations Bloc classes should not schedule any other classes between 8:00 AM and 12:00 PM on the Foundations Bloc days.

During the field experience portion of the classes, students will meet in an urban school from 8:00 AM to 12:00 noon in lieu of these on-campus classes.

Important Note: ERCH & ECSP students in Foundations Bloc classes should not schedule any other classes between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM on the Foundations Bloc days.

 

Professional Bloc

Professional bloc classes should be taken one or two semesters before student teaching. The following courses are part of professional bloc. Professional bloc includes approximately 75 hours of field placement for Art, Music, and Technology Education majors. Bloc includes approximately 150 hours of field placement for English, Foreign Language, Math, Social Studies, Science majors.

  • EDSE 321: Issues in Teaching Secondary Education (English, Foreign Language, Math, Social Studies, Science majors)
  • EDFN 330: Instructional Technology, Design & Assessment (English, Foreign Language, Social Studies, Science majors)
  • EDSE 340: Content Area Literacy in Diverse Classrooms (All secondary + Tech Ed, Art, Music majors -- Not FORL)
  • SPED 346: Secondary Students with Disabilities in Inclusive Classrooms (All secondary + Tech Ed, Art, Music majors)

Plus one of the following methods classes:

Student Teaching

Student teaching is made up of a 9 credit student teaching assignment + a 3 credit blended seminar EDSE 471: Differentiated Instruction in the Classroom

After successfully completing the above requirements and the related field experiences, students are assigned to full-time cooperating teachers and to university supervisors in area school districts for a full semester of student teaching. Students must sign up for student teaching ONE YEAR in advance outside the Field Services Office in Stayer Hall 124.
