Course Requirements and Descriptions

Why Study This Program?

Since 1855, MU has been a leader in preparing exceptional educators, and our legacy continues with specialized programs tailored to today’s classroom needs.  Launch your teaching career or expand your credentials with Millersville University's nationally accredited Earth & Space Science certification program.

This graduate-level certification track is ideal for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in atmospheric, Earth, environmental, or geological sciences and want to:

  • Teach in Pennsylvania public schools
  • Add Earth & Space Science to an existing teaching certificate

Upon completion, you’ll earn a Pennsylvania Instructional I Certificate, qualifying you to inspire the next generation of scientists and explorers.

By applying to this graduate-level program, you can complete the courses you still need for certification as a teacher without completing another degree. Each application to this program is reviewed by a team of professionals in order to award you the most credit for past coursework and to determine what requirements still need to be fulfilled to meet state certification requirements.

Millersville University is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and approved by the American Association of University Women.

What Will You Learn?

The post-baccalaureate certification program for Earth & Space Science features coursework and experiences intended to produce outstanding 7th to 12th grade earth & space science teachers.

All students seeking their first instructional certificate must be admitted to Advanced Professional Studies (APS) at Millersville University. The University follows the APS requirements in order to meet Pennsylvania Department of Education mandates and be considered a state-approved teacher education program that successfully leads students to certification.

The course of study for graduate students progressing through the graduate-level Earth & Space Science program is unique to each student. Once the University reviews your transcripts, you will receive a list of courses that will provide you with the knowledge and experiences you need to excel as an educator. Most applicants need to complete foundational education courses, professional education courses and a semester of student teaching.

The certification programs at MU prepare students to pass the tests required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to receive an Instructional I certificate. In order to be certified as a Biology teacher, you must pass the two-hour Earth Science: Content Knowledge Praxis Test administered by ETS.
